Unlocking Potential
& Innovation
With extensive IP experience and resources, we unlock growth and innovation opportunities for patents, trademarks, and more.
Intellectual Property
Unlocking the potential of intellectual property is one of our key competencies.
As your partner in this dynamic field, we combine experience, deep insights, and determination to create opportunities for growth and innovation. While many private equity firms can offer funds and financial backing, 5Oceans sets itself apart with a unique combination of deep expertise in IP development and litigation, technology, and hands-on management.
We recognize the immense value and potential of intellectual property assets. Whether it’s a tech start-up with ground-breaking patents, a creative agency with unique trademarks, or a biotech company with life-changing inventions, we have the expertise and resources to help you unlock the full value of your intellectual property.
Our team brings decades of experience managing and developing large IP portfolios such as patent portfolios for small to medium to large tech companies. We are uniquely positioned to identify and evaluate IP that is technically, legally, and commercially sound. As such, our ability to build out IP portfolios and develop optimal strategies for IP asset realization is second to none.
Patents can hold immense value for companies, with multiple possibilities for monetization:
Apple Sued Samsung
Patent litigation can result in significant damage awards, especially when high-profile cases involve major companies and widely-used technologies. In one of the most famous patent battles in recent times, Apple sued Samsung for infringing on its smartphone patents. The jury awarded Apple over $1 billion in damages.
Google Acquired Motorola Mobility
Sale of patent portfolios can be a very lucrative monetization strategy. Google famously aquired Motorola Mobility in 2011 primarily for the value of its patents. At that time, Motorola held approximately 14,600 granted patents and 6,700 pending patent applications, which made it far more valuable than just its hardware division.
Qualcomm
Patent licensing provides a direct source of revenue for patent holders. For instance, Qualcomm holds essential patents for 3G, 4G, and 5G wireless technologies. Licensing these technologies to Apple and other smartphone manufacturers constitutes the majority of Qualcomm’s revenue.
Strategies
1. Due Diligence
With decades of IP development and litigation experience, we conduct comprehensive technical, legal and commercial evaluations to ensure that the IP is novel, technically sound, legally protected, and aligns with the business goals.
